Heritage Belgian Beer Cafe at The Rocks, Sydney

The Belgian Beer Cafe is, as its name suggests, a great place to sample the best Belgian beers in Sydney. So what else is good about the place?

What is Belgian Beer Cafe?
I’ve been to the Belgian many times before. It’s a great place to kick back and catch up with friends over some nice, cold Stella Artois or Hoegaarden (or your choice of close to 40 other beers). You will also love the posters of Herge’s Tin Tin along the walls and the general beer hall feel of the place.

My pedestrian thoughts
Every time I went to the Belgian it was on a Wednesday night. That’s because Wednesday is half price mussels day. Nowadays, prices have gone up slightly and it’s $20, but I reckon the awesome mussels with the side of thickly cut chips and mayonnaise dressing is still a great deal. My personal favourite is the mussels cooked Provencale (tomatoes, capsicum, herbs and garlic), but to be honest, I’ve tried most of the flavours and they’re all pretty tasty.

This time round, I found myself at the Belgian on a Friday night. I had the whole menu to choose from that night, which was a bigger dilemma than choosing between the different mussels pots. I chose the twice baked crispy pork belly (~$33) below.

The pork belly came and it was heart attack on a plate. Don’t get me wrong though, I loved every bit of fat in that pork belly as it made the meat so tender and soft. The photo doesn’t do it any justice (other than to show you how dark the Belgian is). It was a great tasting piece of meat, but the biggest disappointment for me was that the skin wasn’t crispy but rather a little chewy. That’s nothing a little beer can’t wash down.
