Hong Kong’s “hero” 黃福榮 (Wong Fuk Wing) 「阿福」 has now been laid to rest.
Wong’s act of bravery gained the praise, admiration and respect of all Hong Kong and mainland Chinese people when he sacrificed his life to save those trapped in debris after the Qinghai earthquake.
Wong worked as a volunteer for the Ci Xing Xi Yuan Hui Orphanage. At the time of the earthquake on 14 April 2010, he had led a group of children safely out into open ground to avoid injury. However, three children and three teachers remained trapped inside a collapsed building in the orphanage. Wong rushed back to save them but unfortunately was caught in an aftershock that further collapsed the building and buried him in the rubble. He managed to save all three children and three teachers. He was not as fortunate.
Wong had helped as a volunteer in the Sichuan earthquake in 2008, and was an active volunteer member in mainland China.
His memorial service was attended by more than one thousand people including top government officials from Hong Kong and Qinghai as well as citizens from all walks of life that have been moved by his act of courage and selflessness. The banner above the alter wrote「典型尚在」(a role model forever). Wreaths from top Chinese government officials adourned the front. The Dalai Lama paid his respects in a letter that contained the words「無私奉獻，遺愛人間」(selfless devotion, leave a legacy of love).
