Sydney will have its own Central Park after the NSW Government announced that 6000 square metres of the former Carlton United Brewery (opposite UTS Tower) will be returned to the public after 150 years. The park will be due for completion by December 2010.
This is part of the 6 hectare redevelopment of the former CUB site to include two iconic buildings designed by international architects. The site will also house 1500 new apartments and associated office and retail space under a concept plan that is currently awaiting final approval. Importance has been placed on integrating the new space with the neighbouring communities of Chippendale and Broadway. Sustainability was also an important design consideration.
It is expected that total completion will take approximately eight years. Central Park will be the largest urban renewal project in Sydney since Darling Harbour in 1988 and Melbourne’s Docklands.
